A Lifetime Commitment

One day, the man of your life will stand before you, holding a ring in a small velvet box, and he’ll say these words: “My love, will you spend the rest of your days by my side? Will you commit to me? Will you marry me?”

A lifelong commitment—what does it all mean? It’s not what everyone thinks! It’s not just the ring on your finger, keeping the house in order, or eating two or three meals together. It’s not just sex or cuddling in bed until you fall asleep peacefully. It’s not taking each other for granted and living in an endless rut.

It’ll be someone who steals the covers from you or snores like a tractor. It’ll sometimes be doors slammed shut, a few shouts, and a few harsh words. It’ll be disagreements followed by a good back-and-forth, silence until you end up laughing about it! It’s coming home every day, finding the same person every day—someone you know, love, and who cares about you. No matter who you are or how strong your personality is. It’ll be laughing about the time you left a bottle out for a few days before washing it, laughing about a moment that drove you crazy, and joking about your old arguments. It’ll be about dirty laundry and unmade beds—no big deal—and not criticizing each other because he’ll have cooked you a meal while you were giving the kids a bath. It’ll be about helping each other, listening to each other, and understanding each other through life’s trials! It’ll mean eating the coldest, most hastily prepared meal in the world, together, just the two of you, because you’ve been running around all day and want to enjoy a moment together.

Commitment to someone you love means always loving that person, even if sometimes they drive you absolutely crazy, make you angry, or even make you sad. It means loving your partner just as they are—fat or thin, happy or grumpy, short or tall—through sickness and pain. Love isn’t perfect, but it’s incredible!

So, if one day you find yourself facing a commitment, tell yourself that it won’t be perfect, but that it will be the best thing you’ll ever experience in your life!
