A Very Different Christmas

It’s true that every Christmas is unique, but we have to admit that this year’s Christmas is going to break all records!

It’s still uncertain as I write this. It’s kind of strange to think that we probably won’t be able to celebrate Christmas the way we usually do. One of the options being suggested is a Christmas gathering with 10 people on specific days. The idea of having to choose who you want to spend Christmas Eve with isn’t much fun—it even takes away some of the magic. We have to follow social distancing guidelines, which isn’t so easy to explain to a child who’s been bored and who, deep down, just needs a hug. And even for us adults, it’ll be hard to stick to.

Obviously, we have to make do with what we can—it’s certainly better than doing nothing at all. I’m also thinking about the elderly. Many of them are already alone. When you reach a certain age, it’s also harder to understand what’s going on. For some, this will be their last Christmas. It’ll be hard to tell them that this year won’t be as festive as usual. Saying nothing would be lying to them—and to ourselves as well. They’ve experienced Christmases with their entire family gathered together, a house full of joy and laughter. This year, it will be quieter than ever.

Let’s get creative! We mustn’t abandon them! Their well-being depends a little—or even a lot—on us. Everyone who’s lucky enough to be surrounded by loved ones should give some of their time to someone who isn’t as fortunate. This Christmas will be very memorable for everyone, without exception. Yes, Santa will have his little bottle of Purell by the tree. I hope I’m not the only one who’s had this idea, because we can never be too careful!

We must be stronger and more united to make this Christmas wonderful in one way or another. That’s why we’re parents: to make the impossible magical and create unique memories. Once again this year, our resilience and kindness will be our allies in overcoming the isolation and fear that have crept in among us without really being invited.

Christmas must remain what it is at its core: a celebration of magic, happiness, and above all, human warmth. Social distancing or not, it’s possible.

Do you have any ideas for keeping traditions alive despite the pandemic?
