We can complain. We can get outraged. We can find dozens of reasons to be disappointed and angry. We can whine over and over again, post about it on social media, and cry foul. We’d probably be right to do so. This damn pandemic is going to change everything yet again and ruin a lot of things. For some people, things are better, but for others, they’re even worse.
No matter what we think or say about it, no matter how we feel, the situation isn’t going to simply get better overnight. COVID-19 isn’t going to just disappear on its own just because we want a normal Christmas. This year, there hasn’t been much that’s been normal. We might as well focus on the things we can control.
For our own sake and that of our children, let’s channel our energy elsewhere.
The consequences shouldn’t be downplayed—I’ll grant you that—and it’s obvious that this isn’t easy. Let’s just try to find ways to do things differently. This isn’t about doing it just to follow the guidelines; it’s simply about doing it for our own good and that of our loved ones. Our grandparents, parents, and children deserve for us to set aside this hostility and focus on finding solutions instead.
This Christmas, let’s do everything we can to surround our little ones (and not-so-little ones) with magic. Let’s do everything we can to make this season as hectic as usual.
This Christmas, let’s put the debate aside. We’ll come back to it later.
In the meantime, let’s think of them, think of ourselves, and do our best.
After all, it’s still Christmas.
And you—what alternatives will you be exploring?
