Don't Forget About Yourself

Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today. You’ve probably heard that before. Maybe you’ve even thought about it often but never put it into practice. Have you ever told yourself, “I’ll do it tomorrow”? If so, this post is for you.

In the morning, you wake up as usual with just one thing on your mind: a latte from Starbucks. However, it doesn’t fit at all into your crazy daily schedule. You’re running on autopilot—no joke. On your way there, that latte stays in the back of your mind. You’re thinking about it so much that you didn’t even notice the traffic light turn green. As if that weren’t enough, the guy behind you honks at you—and on top of that, you see him drinking his coffee and judging the way you drive. As a wake-up call, it’s pretty effective! That’s when you tell yourself, “No, I need that coffee. I’ll be late—so what!” Your best decision yet. Next stop: “coffee time.” After that, nothing worse can happen. The kids are late for school—so what? The coffee is delicious, and your kids seem really happy to be treated like stars at school. For once, that saying makes you feel less guilty.

On the other hand, your boss doesn’t see it that way. You feel small in your jacket, and suddenly your coffee is cold. You were just treating yourself—you listened to yourself for once. So tell him without hesitation: “I’m sorry, it won’t happen again. I had to take an unexpected detour—you know how it is with kids…”

Put yourself first; try more often not to put off your dreams and ambitions until tomorrow. Every day is a new one—create yours just the way you like it. For me, that’s one milk and two sugars, please. Yes, there are obligations, and responsibilities too, but you can spice things up with some well-deserved treats. Life is short—if we don’t treat ourselves, who will?

Make a note in your planner: don’t put anything off until tomorrow. Unless it’s beyond your means—even then, it’s possible to find a solution or a compromise. Tonight, where will you be?

As for me, once everything’s under control, I’ll be in front of the TV, sprawled on the couch with my blanket, a glass of wine, and my favorite show. Pure bliss.
