After two months of vacation, warm weather, the beach, and camping, it’s now time to head back to school. With lunches, sports, and homework, it won’t be long before the “commute-work-sleep” routine catches up with us. We’ll start rushing back and forth again between work, the kids’ activities, and monthly reports that need to be turned in on time at work.
Gone are the mornings spent watching the kids play on the patio while I sipped my coffee. Gone are those evenings when my only worry was whether we’d run out of firewood or if we’d left the marshmallows on the counter before heading out. Gone are those days when we could head out at any time of day to play at the park with the whole gang.
Today, I’m stressed. I get stressed just thinking about how I’m going to have to dress the kids tomorrow morning, knowing it’ll be 2 degrees when we leave the house and that by the time we get back, the sun will make the 18 degrees feel much warmer. It’s getting dark earlier and earlier, and the time change is coming soon—the one that reminds us of the arrival of cold weather, the lack of daylight, but also the gloomier moods of those who hate winter.
My boyfriend and I will steal a quick kiss here and there, between brushing our teeth, on the doorstep. He’ll surely give my butt a subtle squeeze while I’m doing the dishes, before heading to the bathroom to bathe the kids. We’ll finally end up in bed, just exhausted enough from our crazy day, and no sooner have we lain down than HE’LL already be snoring.
September, in my opinion, is the least relaxing month of the bunch. It’s a 9-letter word invented to remind you that you won’t be able to sit down and relax until at least 9 p.m. tonight. September is a gentle month, but at the same time, such a hectic one.
September, between you and me, is a love-hate relationship. The routine is exhausting, sure, but when you come back, you bring me back to what really matters… You make me appreciate even more the moments when I’m with my whole family, on Saturday mornings around the pancakes my husband has cooked. You make me proud when I see all the stars in my oldest son’s eyes on the first day of school.
September, thank you for existing, because without you, I’d have one less month to prepare Christmas gifts.
