Emotions are part of a child’s learning process, but you, my child, I don’t want you to learn to be sad. How do we explain to the apple of our eye this little feeling we have inside? The one that turns into pain and brings tears to our eyes?
You, my child, are innocent when it comes to sadness, because I give you a world of toys and unicorns. One day, you’ll understand that unicorns don’t really exist and that the world we live in is full of lies and anger. I’m afraid that society will shatter your most beautiful childhood dreams—the ones where you saw everything in color.
You’ll hear that Santa Claus doesn’t exist, and you’ll probably be angry that we lied to you. Know that we, your parents, want to keep you in this little, bright world where anything is possible for as long as possible. At my age, I still want to believe in the tooth fairy. The beauty of your innocence is that you’ll be able to believe in whatever you want. Love, happiness, world peace… you name it! You’ll be the master of your own universe. When I see the first tear roll down your cheek, a part of my happiness will fade away. But you, my child, I never want you to wake up and say, “Mom, why are you crying?”
Today I decide, just like you, to be the master of my own universe. To each their own happiness. You are my role model, and together we’ll continue to believe that Mr. Turtle the puppet talks and sings real songs.
