More Complaints: The Sequel

I’m Filing a Complaint Against Screens

I sat my son down to watch that show kids love so much—the one where little dogs save the world, and I mean, really save the world… A captain whose boat is always sinking, a forest ranger caught in an avalanche, and a mayor who loses her chicken (AGAIN!!!)… You know, the “masters of resourcefulness”?

Why do we always have to watch the Christmas one? Even on the tablet, I don’t know how he does it… he manages to find it! He can’t tie his shoes, he can’t read… but he finds THE right episode for you in 30 seconds. Otherwise, it’s that song in every style imaginable (country, pop, jazz)—“mommyfinge, mommyfinger, where are you…”

Those videos blow my mind… there are over 10 million views!!! That means the “creators” are getting pretty nice checks just for stringing some clips together with a cheerful little tune… And then I think to myself… But who? Who does that?

Why didn’t I think of that myself?!?! (I want a check too!!!) 😉

I’m filing a complaint against “whining”

Well, yeah, because these days, that’s all we do—whine… We whine that we whine too much. But that’s also what being a mom is all about. It’s whining about the little and big obstacles of everyday life. It’s sometimes saying that we love being moms even if it’s not always easy. It’s dreaming of the day when we’ll finally have a little time to ourselves, but panicking as we watch time fly by so quickly and realize our kids are now grown up (and more independent). It’s looking forward to when they’re in bed and looking at photos and videos of them while they’re fast asleep. It’s having a romantic evening together, talking about our precious little treasures, and telling each other that they’re extraordinary and that we’re doing just fine. And those little “reasons to cry”—well, I just can’t live without them anymore…

So bring on the grocery carts that are too small, the car seats that are too heavy, the winter clothes that are too big, and the toys that take up too much space—the annoying little songs and the shows that play on repeat, the days that are too long, the weeks that are too short, and so much more… I love it all!
