To be honest, the question “What’s for dinner?” is THE question that’s gotten on my nerves the most since I became a mom. It’s funny, but it’s always directed at me… not at Dad or the kids… Why me? Do I look like a walking cookbook?
Let’s face it, ladies—it’s a good thing we’re here. It’s a good thing our men have us. I don’t know about you, but for me, not a day goes by without me asking myself at least once: “Okay, what are we going to eat tonight? What do I have in my fridge and pantry that could help me whip up something to feed my kids and my hardworking husband?”
No matter how much I plan ahead—writing down over the weekend what we’re going to eat each day of the week—during the day I still find myself thinking about meals, telling myself, “Okay, I need to get home by such-and-such a time so I can get everything ready and not put the kids to bed too late.”
Even when I use the slow cooker, there’s at least one time during the day when I catch myself thinking, “Well, what are we having for dinner tonight? Oh yeah, dinner’s already going to be ready—I set the slow cooker!” I just remembered that I’d rushed around that morning to prepare dinner before heading to daycare and work. What a joy when that happens!
Men, on the other hand, don’t even have to worry about that. At least, not my guy. The only thing I can think of that might make him think about it is his rumbling stomach, and he’s probably just thinking, “Okay, what did my girlfriend decide to make for dinner?”
I tip my hat to single dads, who have to deal with these thoughts once a day. When they first became single dads, boy, it must not have been easy just to think about figuring out what to feed their kids! Kudos to you, single dad, and welcome to the world of moms’ minds!
And for us moms—including me—kudos for all the meal ideas we come up with every night for our little ones. But don’t let any of you answer, “I don’t know, whatever you want,” when I ask, “What do you want to eat? Mom’s out of ideas!!!”
No hard feelings, to my husband, whom I adore 😉
