Just recently, I returned to work after 14 months of maternity leave. I was nervous about this moment because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to be the SSuperwoman that’s who I am. Cleaning, laundry, making dinner, grocery shopping, mowing the lawn, etc. I was wondering how I’d manage all of that without neglecting the little moments I’d be spending with my son in this new routine.
You know, a one-year-old goes to bed pretty early, so when I get home from work, it’s: making dinner, a little playtime, a bath, and bedtime. Maybe it’s ungrateful of me, but I never thought I’d run out of time for my son—I was thinking about my HOUSEWORK!
It’s been two weeks since I went back to work, and I can tell you that what’s stressing me out more and more is not having enough time with HIM. Forget about cleaning! I want to spend time with my son. In just two weeks, my priorities—which used to be keeping my house in order—have quickly shifted to mom-and-child-time. Housework is a never-ending cycle! But watching a child grow up is a one-time deal. I want to be with him, playing with toy trucks and going to the park to swing on the swings, just to see him smile endlessly. I want to fill up his baby pool so we can play with a ball in the water. I want to watch him eat his snack with his adorable little heart-shaped mouth. Well, yes—like most moms, I’m hooked on my son.
Going back to work quickly made me realize that I now value our time together more than a winning lottery ticket.
Even if you get up way too early on Saturdays, I can't wait to come pick you up out of bed and make you a fun breakfast. Now, emptying the dishwasher has taken a back seat because you, my love, easily take the number one spot on my list of priorities.
Why try to be a Superwoman when to be a Supermom brings us so much more happiness?
