Monday Blues

For many of us, this feeling comes back every Sunday night. This slight bout of the blues creeps in to remind us that our two days off are over. In a few hours, we’ll have to go back to work and wait another five days to relive those all-too-brief moments.

This feeling doesn’t mean we don’t like our jobs. Rather, I believe it reflects a longing for the moments spent in the comfort of our family homes or with friends and loved ones—and for the activities that are now part of our past. We all tell ourselves that time flies by too quickly. This little phobia often sets in as the second day draws to a close, and yet no one ever seems to get used to it. Come to think of it, we’ll all end up getting together again next Friday for another weekend.

By the end of Sunday, we start getting busy preparing for the days ahead. We think about lunches, grocery shopping, appointments that might be scheduled during the week, and the tasks we’ll have to tackle at work.  For some, this feeling may also include a touch of anxiety about a long to-do list or events planned for the coming days. The week then looms like a mountain filled with various obstacles to overcome in order to reach the summit.

This feeling and these tasks recur over and over again in our lives as the years go by. We should learn to come to terms with them and still enjoy our Sunday evening. It is still possible to make the most of these hours leading up to the start of a new week.

Why not break the routine and plan a fun activity to wrap up Sunday? That way, we can push that little case of the blues to the back of our minds. Let’s shake up our daily routine every now and then and get our week organized earlier in the day so we can enjoy the evening. Why not cook a nice dinner, have a movie night, or go out for a bit? Did someone say we can’t have guests over for dinner on Sunday or go out to a restaurant? Let’s make the most of Sunday evenings—after all, there will be thousands of them in our lives.
