In life, I try to approach my experiences with a positive attitude, so I can learn and grow as a woman and as a mom. I’m working really hard on letting go and staying positive… but sometimes you really push my limits!
I’ll admit, I’ve gotten used to that little morning coffee my husband makes while he’s on paternity leave. But I like my coffee in my cup… not up your nose!
Well, okay, maybe I wasn’t paying close enough attention and didn’t notice that little coffee bean on the floor, even though I’d just swept the kitchen. Okay, I could’ve taken my time and let your brother cry a little… but seriously? What was that all about? Did you think it was cool to shove a coffee bean as big as your face up your tiny nostril? Did you want to smell it up close? Get an instant brew?
No, I didn’t understand why you were crying when you called me. I thought you’d bumped your head while playing, that you were hungry, or some other valid reason for that flood of tears. Then you looked at me and said, “No! My nose! Coffee in my nose!”
I don’t know what my face was telling you, but my heart stopped beating. I tried to calm you down… and, above all, to calm myself down! I was so hoping it wasn’t true. My wish was in vain; I could clearly see the coffee bean in your nostril.
Luckily, I was able to easily grab the intruder to free your little nose from that smelly intruder—which was now pretty much a sticky mess of snot from a congested, crying baby, but still. What a crazy idea you had!
After drying your tears and calming my frantic little heart, I was able to explain the dangers of that little action to you. Yes, it’s trivial in a way. Yes, it happens to most babies. Yes, I let you learn and make mistakes. But I know you’ve understood when I hear you repeating over and over: “Never, ever in the nose!”
You know, every challenge you face will teach me just as much as it teaches you. I try to guide you as best I can—my top priority is making sure you stay alive, you know! I’m laughing about it now, but I know I won’t be laughing the day your brother pulls the “broccoli up the nose” stunt on me...
