As I write this, I’m in my first week as a single mom. My first week of shared custody. My first week adjusting to a new routine, but most of all, my first week of a whole new chapter for the three of us—without Dad.
I was nervous about the first night—the first time Dad wouldn’t be there to give you kisses and say goodnight. Surprisingly, everything went smoothly. No crying or screaming.
I was nervous about the first morning of the week—getting ready for daycare and school. Everything went like clockwork.
I was nervous about our first evening routine—juggling dinner prep, lighting the wood stove, homework, and two kids screaming that they’re starving! In the end, it was much less stressful than I expected.
Our new routine is still in its early stages, but I love our new routine as a family of three. It’s not perfect, of course, but we’re taking it at our own pace, and things are going well!
It won’t always be a bed of roses—I’m well aware of that—but for the wonderful moments to come, it’s definitely worth it. I was so afraid of uprooting you from your routine, but in the end, everyone adapted almost naturally, without any stress. I’m really starting to enjoy my new reality—though actually, I should say our new reality.
