My cousin

My cousin, as I write these words, my heart is heavy… my heart aches… my heart cries out in frustration… Life is so fragile! We often think we’re invincible, that a bomb could never fall on us. Unfortunately, that’s not true. A bomb, a grenade, a tsunami, or a hurricane can come and destroy an entire life. On June 19, 2019, the world came to a standstill for our family. Ever since then, my cousin, you’ve been fighting to stay alive, in a distant world, in a coma… Every day, we pray and talk to you, hoping you’ll wake up, hoping you’ll come back to us. I know you’re trying your hardest, that you’re fighting, that you want to come back to us, but I also know that you’re taking the time to rest so you can come back to us stronger than ever. I believe in you, in your strength, and in your potential. You’re strong, my cousin…

Every day, we have to be patient, we have to wait, we have to hope… My cousin, you’re not alone in your fight—we’re all with you. Not just your family, but your friends too, your friends’ friends, and even people who don’t even know you. The bomb that fell on us—on you—also fell on many people, on almost the entire world. Your story, your accident, has touched hundreds of people. There are hundreds and hundreds of us meditating every evening at 7 p.m. for you, so that you can feel our presence… can you imagine all the candles burning for you? It’s amazing!

I know you know all this; I know you can hear us; I know you know we’re waiting for you; I know you know we love you so much… I also know that all of this means you’re still with us. Keep fighting, my cousin, but also keep resting if you need to. We’ll be patient if it means having you back with us, if it means hearing your voice again, your laughter, your zest for life, and your strength of character… We’ll be patient for you…

Don’t worry, my cousin; we’re taking care of your mom, your dad, your brother, and Samy… As for me, I’m trying to take care of myself, my heart, and the fear I have of losing you forever… I’m doing my best to keep my tears from flowing all day long, because I know everything will be okay… I know you’re here—still here.

Thankfully, our family is a close-knit one… a family that sticks together and never gives up on each other. The love we have for one another is so strong that nothing can tear us apart. Thanks to our close-knit family, we won’t give up on you, and we won’t lose hope.

I love you, my cousin; we all love you… come back to us, in great shape.
