When chance turns everything upside down…

A coincidence—a simple coincidence—that turned everything upside down… When we first met, we were young, carefree, and certainly not ready for life as a couple. Then, without warning, you reappeared in my life: a simple coincidence, after more than 10 years…

We saw each other on a freezing winter evening; our eyes met, and we remembered just how simple everything had been between us. That desire so hard to control, that knot in our stomachs that reminded us of the reasons why we’d never seen each other again—and, above all, all those questions that rushed through our minds. What if we’d met later? What if we’d seen each other sooner? What if you hadn’t been in a relationship? What if I didn’t have a family? What if, what if, what if…

Sometimes I tell myself that life is unfair. You haven’t been single for years, and I’ve had a family for a long time. Yet, for a while, I believed in it. I told myself that this kind of coincidence didn’t happen for no reason, that life would make sure we could be happy, that love and passion would triumph. But that’s not the reality. The reality is that I have a boyfriend whom I love too, with whom I’ve built a family and a wonderful life. The reality is also that you have a life of your own with her and that you’re not ready to give it all up.

We managed to resist, we managed to see reason, we managed to accept our realities—even though our hearts didn’t want to and it hurt deep down. Even if some people will think we did it out of obligation, I believe we did it out of love: out of love for ourselves and out of love for them.

I don’t know what life has in store for us; I wish so much I could predict the future. What I do know is that I hope you’ll be happy, because you deserve it.

If, if, if, if…? We’ll never know… I dare to believe that life sometimes works out just right and that we made the right choice.
