For the first time

I’m one of those people who always puts others’ happiness first. I realize that in thirty years, I’ve never taken care of myself—physically or mentally—as much as I should have.

I’m one of those people who believe that the well-being of the people I love comes before everything else. I’ve never taken the time to put my life on hold for a few moments to ask myself what I wanted, what I needed.

Over the years, with the daily grind, the kids, and everything else, I even came to forget what I truly loved. I realized I was no longer even a shadow of the woman I used to be, and I had even less of a clue about what kind of woman I wanted to become. I had to start focusing on what I thought I wanted to be. What do I love? Who am I? What do I want? What do I need? All questions I didn’t have the answers to… At least, not yet…

For the first time, I chose myself. For my happiness, for my mental health, and for everything that matters to me. I decided to close a chapter of my life—for my well-being, to be a good mother to my children, and to be happy.

Because in the end, that’s what matters: being happy. In my case, I had to make some difficult choices for my family. But just because we close a chapter doesn’t mean the story is over.

For the first time in thirty years, I’m going to take the time to listen to myself, rediscover who I am, and get to know the new woman I’ve become. Because it’s never too late to put yourself first.
