Since I work in Montreal’s Old Port, the most efficient way for me to get to work is to take the bus and the metro. Of course, this method has its share of drawbacks, and I sometimes wonder if people are aware of the “unwritten” rules for using public transit respectfully. So here’s a quick guide for those who need a little refresher:
First of all, keep to the right on the stairs, whether they’re escalators or not. The left side is reserved for those going up the escalator, while on regular stairs, the left side is for those heading in the opposite direction. Don’t forget to keep your many bags out of the way (my little one and I have taken quite a few hits from them… Yikes.)
Don’t push your way in when the subway is crowded; we all pay the same fare to use the service, we’re all in a hurry, and we all have appointments or jobs waiting for us. And if you’re carrying a backpack, be patient and wait for the next train. (Once again, my little one got hit hard with a bag, and another passenger called the culprit out on it. The result?? A faint smile and no apology.)
So please give up your seats to people who need them. I’m not talking about passengers who want to read their newspaper or those catching up on TV shows on their phones. I’m talking about elderly people, parents with children who don’t have strollers, and pregnant women. I find it absolutely inconceivable that in 2018, there are still so many people hiding behind their individualism and pretending “not to see anything.” At every stop, I look up to make sure the people getting on don’t need a seat—it’s not that big of a challenge, is it??
Be careful with your coffee; I once had to bring a shirt to my brother after he had a full cup of coffee spilled on his back right before an important meeting with a company executive. I’m the first to admit my desperate need for caffeine in the morning, but when I have some, I put it in a thermos. It’s as easy as pie!!
In short, to avoid getting stuck in traffic, we find ourselves caught up in a rush where it’s easy to see that individual interests take precedence. Living in society and being respectful of others goes without saying—even on the subway. Be courteous, stay alert, and avoid bumping into everything in your path. We all have somewhere we need to go!!
