A Friendship That Isn't a Friendship Anymore

In life, things change; we grow up, we evolve, we make decisions, we walk away, we start over, and so on… Unfortunately, not all friendships stand the test of time.

As for me, I’ve never really had a friendship that lasted over the long term. I’m someone who gives a lot, listens a great deal, and asks for nothing in return but love. I never ask to get back what I’ve given or to receive more in exchange. I never demand that someone listen to me if they don’t feel like it. I never ask for anything. However, for me, a friendship is built and nurtured… but not just by one side. A friendship has two sides, and each of us must do what’s necessary to keep the flame of friendship alive.

I learned this not too long ago.... Before, I used to forgive. Before, I kept giving without asking for anything in return, but it hurt me. Before, I listened without asking to be listened to, even when I really needed it. Before, I was sad to see that I was rowing alone on one side and the boat wasn’t moving forward… Today, if I’m rowing alone, I get off the boat! I don’t ask for anything more, but I realize that the other person simply doesn’t deserve my friendship. Today, I no longer make an effort for people who don’t make an effort on their end. Today, I recognize my true friends; I know that our relationship is a “give-and-take” one and that I don’t maintain it on my own or for nothing. Today, I focus on those who focus on me, who truly want me in their lives.

Today, I stay true to myself and nurture the friendships that are worth keeping alive—the ones where I know that no matter where I am or what I’m doing, they’ll always be there, no matter what!
