My Virtual Friends

One day—a very gloomy day—I met two girls… “Met” is a big word… we connected in a support group for moms who had just lost a baby. Our friendship blossomed in the blink of an eye. The bond the three of us shared was—and still is—indescribable. All three of us had experienced a profound loss, around the same time… our grief was the same, and we knew we wanted to get pregnant again despite it all.

Day by day, every time we talked, a little hope would rise up inside me. I had two friends who understood me and knew the anguish I was going through. It’s funny, but I’ve never met these two extraordinary women in person, and yet it feels as if we’re having coffee together in my living room every day.

Friendship doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be simple—and even long-distance. For us, we’re a two-hour drive apart. That doesn’t change how much we care about each other or how we’ve formed a little group of “super-moms.” We help and encourage each other, from a distance and without judgment. With them, whether I’m on my computer or my cell phone, I feel listened to, heard, supported, and loved. Yes, yes—we love each other deeply even if we’re talking through a screen.

In fact, I’m grateful to Facebook for letting me get to know them, because without this social network, I wouldn’t have such wonderful virtual friends. Our friendship isn’t over yet. Life has been kind to us… we got pregnant one after the other, all within a month of each other.

Today, three little boys are part of our beautiful friendship. Our virtual friendship grows stronger every day, and soon we’ll be hitting the road to see each other in person with our children.
